Affinity versus Adobe
As a graphic designer I am often asked about Adobe products usually how I afford it if I like using them etc. Lets go over my thoughts and so pros and cons of the two design suites.
Affinity Products are fairly new and yet they have quickly made a name for themselves as a user friendly cost effective option compared to its competitors. Compared to Adobe product who are the veterans of this field and the industry standard. So which is better overall? Let’s look at some main factors like cost, integration, user interface etc. to get a good idea of where each company excels.
Affinity: The New Kids
-
Affinity software comes with a one-time purchase fee. No subscriptions here! This makes it super appealing for freelancers or those just starting out.
-
Most users including myself find the interface more intuitive, with a smoother learning curve, especially if you’re new to digital arts programs.
-
Affinity products are still the new kids so while their current products cover the basics like photo editing and logo design they have a few gaps in their market.
-
Unlike Adobe, Affinity products don’t integrate as seamlessly with other design tools and platforms, which can be a downside if you use multiple programs.
-
The community surrounding Affinity is much smaller than Adobe mainly because the programs haven't been around as long. This means that there are fewer tutorials and community resources so finding help can be a bit difficult.
Adobe: The Industry Standard
-
Adobe uses a subscription model which isn't ideal for everyone especially those just getting started because those fees can add up.
-
The depth of features can be overwhelming, particularly for beginners. Due to this it can be overwhelming to get started and difficult to master.
-
Adobe offers a suite of applications (like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) that cover almost every aspect of design, giving you endless creative possibilities. If your'e looking for a very specific program or tool Adobe has got it.
-
Adobe has been the go-to for many agencies and clients for many years as the industry standard.
-
Due to Adobe's long standing prowess there are tons of tutorials, forums, and plugins to help you along in your creative endeavors. No matter where you look there inspiration will be waiting.
The Verdict
Out of all this information there are two big questions to answer. What are your needs and budget? If you’re looking for a straightforward, cost-effective solution, Affinity might be your best bet. However, if you need a comprehensive suite of tools and don’t mind the subscription model, Adobe could be the way to go. I personally recommend Affinity because it is cheaper in the long run and more user friendly. Whatever you choose both have great tools to help you in you professional and creative endeavors! Happy designing!
